Mark Stewart: Stranger Than Love

I think this could be one of my favorites of all time.

I also just came to the realization that it kind of reminds me of the 2006 DFA remix of Arthur Russell's "Springfield."

I remember dancing to this song in Europe in 1987...

It has always been one of my favorite songs of all times. Hard to believe it's 20 years old. So beautiful... timeless. Ah, melancholy!

btw -- did you know that Tricky used to be Mark Stewart's protege? If I remember correctly Tricky used to hang out at Mark Stewart's house when he was still a teenager -- you can hear the influence in his early work.

I once rode on a train from Vienna to Amsterdam with Mark Stewart's girlfriend (in the late 80s) -- she was this ugly, skinny, crazy chick, not too smart but pretty insane.

Mark Stewart was a pretty out-there guy himself, as you can hear in his early Pop Group and Maffia work which I don't like that much. "Stranger" was when he started getting it together, and the zenith of his work, but I also admire his later work with Tackhead/Keith LeBlanc/Adrian Sherwood... far ahead of their time. Check out the tune "Time Bomb" if interested in Tackhead.

I saw them live once and it was so clear to everyone how far ahead of their time they were and how they were writing music history before our eyes.
